Smytham Manor Little Torrington Access statement
Smytham Manor is a gently undulating rural park
situated 2 miles from Great Torrington off of the A386.
The nearest train station is Barnstaple some 12miles away. The ‘First’ bus service runs bus no.86 from
Great Torrington to Plymounth, via Okehampton, and this can be requested to stop at the entrance to the park.
The service runs between twice and four times daily depending on the day and season. Check with the bus
company as to exact times. There are numbers for local taxi services available in reception and they have
people carriers and taxis with wheel chair access.
The park is accessed by its own tree lined tarmac driveway that is approx ½ mile long. There are marked
speed ramps on the driveway that have areas to the side for wheel chair /motablitity vehicles to use. The
speed limit on the park is 5 MPH.
The park has lodges, touring and camping areas and privately owned caravan holiday homes.
SELF CATERING LODGES
On entering the Park you pass the lodges. Each has 8 steps onto a decked area with entrance to the lodge.
The lodges have a gravelled area at the front and a formal bed with shrubs. Cars can be parked alongside.
RECEPTION & BAR
The reception/bar building has an accessible parking space alongside. A ramp or 2 steps onto a decked
walkway serves this building where double doors lead into reception. The doors have low level handles and
thresh-hold for easy access. Within the reception there is a shop area selling daily essentials. The bar
is adjacent to reception and has a dual height service counter. There is a decked veranda with tables and
chairs and a view across the park. The building has gents, ladies and accessible toilet with grab rails.
Within the building the doors are all push doors with a good contrast between the floor/ wall and door ways.
The building is well lit both inside and out. Staff have taken ‘Welcome All’ courses. Assistance to settle
in is available and should be requested when booking in at reception. Assistance in pitching is also available
upon request. The management or warden is on call 24 hours daily. Large print booking-in sheets and
information is available upon request.
Next-to reception there is a public telephone box with a small step into it. Emergency and useful numbers
are on display in the ‘phone box.
Opposite the reception building is a summer house that houses the tourist information leaflets, books and
magazines. It is accessed by a low ramp. Assistance dogs are welcome in the bar, reception camping/touring
area and caravan holiday homes.
Reception is open from 9am to 9pm in the high season and in the morning and afternoon in quieter periods
times are displayed on the door and also on welcome sheets given out on arrival.
HOLIDAY HOMES
Beyond the reception are the privately owned caravan holiday homes. These have a variety of steps or ramps
to access them. They all have a parking space alongside the majority of which are hard surface. The roads around
the park are compacted gravel and not tarmac which assists with drainage.
TOURING & CAMPING .
The tenting and touring pitches are level and terraced some hard standing and some grass. Grey water disposal
points and fresh water taps are in several places on the touring field. There are also Fire points at various
points around the park.
FACILITIES BLOCK
There is one facilities block which has under floor heating. It is within easy reach of all pitches, however
should it be needed a pitch closer to the facilities can be requested when making a booking. The ladies have 4
WCs, 4 hand wash sinks, a wash cubicle and 3 showers. The gents have 2 urinals, 3 WCs, 3 sinks, a wash cubicle
and 2 showers. The accessible/family room has a toilet, shower with seat, wash basin, grab rails and also the
nappy changing unit. The laundry has a sink, washing machine, tumble dryer, freezer for ice blocks and ironing
board. An iron can be hired from reception. There is a contrast between the walls/ floor and doors in this
building. The area around the facilities block is tarmaced the entrances are level. The chemical toilet disposal
point is along side the facilities block and has a flush, hose, hand wash basin and a level entrance. There are
3 washing up sinks at different heights along the front of the building and they are under cover. The rubbish
and recycling area is accessible by car and level.
PARK
Mobile phone service on the park is poor however. The best coverage is with Vodaphone although some other
servers have some coverage at different points on the park.
The lighting around the park is low level and goes off after midnight to reduce light pollution and
assist conservation.
The swimming pool is within the walled garden area and has no lifeguard. Under 15s and non swimmers
must be accompanied by an adult. The gate to the pool area is locked when the pool is closed. There are
4 steps into the pool at the shallow end. There is a terraced area around the pool and pool side furniture.
There is a children’s play area with swings slides climbing frame on to rubber matting that is accessed across
a grassed area and grass bank. The games room is located alongside with a level decked area outside with seating.
Dogs have to be kept on a lead around the park. You must clear up after your dog. Access to the dog exercise
area (approx 3 acres), ponds and the Tarka trail is across a grassed area with a pathway down a hill and along
side a stream.
To access the Tarka trail there is a boardwalk and bridge over the stream and a climb up through a wooded area.
Smytham is a family park and guests are asked to be quiet by 11pm for everyone’s enjoyment.
SHOPPING
Great Torrington has a small supermarket as well as several independent butchers, bakers and green grocers.
Larger branches of major supermarket chains are located at Barnstaple and Bideford and will deliver to the park
for a small charge. There are mini marts offering newspapers, bread, frozen foods, vegetables and off- license
that open to 10pm in Great Torrington 2 miles from the park.
